MovemberEarlier this month, you may have started seeing men in your life sporting the beginnings of a patchy moustache. Whether it looks like a Tom Selleck, Charlie Chaplin, or somewhere in-between, it’s pretty likely he’s sporting the ‘stache in support of Movember.

Movember started 15 years ago when two friends in Australia decided they were going to bring back the moustache to the fashion game. They convinced 30 of their friends to grow moustaches along with them, with the talking point used to raise awareness for prostate cancer and men’s health.

Since then, Movember has grown into a global movement, inspiring support from more than 5 million men and women, and having helped fund 1200 men’s health initiatives worldwide. The Movember Foundation addresses some of the biggest health issues that men face, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. They are determined to stop men from dying too young, and want to guarantee that they live happier, longer lives.

They’re doing this by making the commitment to reduce the rate of male suicide by 25% by 2030, and cutting the number of men dying from prostate or testicular cancer in half.

The stats don’t lie. Worldwide, a man dies by suicide every minute. In Canada, approximately 75% suicides are men. What’s more, on average, men die six years younger than women. The Movember Foundation has made it their goal to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%, by focusing on three core areas:

  • Prostate cancer
  • Testicular cancer
  • Mental health and suicide prevention

They want to empower men and give them the facts that change their behaviour for the better. Giving men the tools to change their behaviour for the better, creating services that work for the community, in order to better advocate for men. The Movember Foundation achieves this mission by supporting innovative research, and supporting and running awareness and fundraising activities throughout the year that get men ad the larger community to talk about men’s health and encouraging them to take action.
